19 Best VCs You Should Know About for Investing in AI and Machine Learning Startups

  • In 2021, venture capital deal activity in AI technology soared to $118 billion, according to data from PitchBook.
  • AI and data companies like HyperScience and Anyscale top $1 billion valuations.
  • Many big VCs betting on AI and machine learning startups focus on data management.

Venture capital investment in artificial intelligence appears to have slowed slightly in 2022 from the all-time highs of last year.

But top VCs from companies like Sequoia Capital, Coatue, Bessemer Venture Partners, Foundation Capital and others told Insider they are seriously considering investing in AI and machine learning technology, especially in when it comes to managing and optimizing large, unwieldy datasets.

Investment journeys have validated some long-term AI VCs over the past decade. For example, Foundation Capital’s Ashu Garg was an early investor in analytics decacorn Databricks, which raised $1.6 billion last August. The evolution of software technology has helped expand the applications of AI at lower cost, he said.

“If you look at what’s happened in AI, a lot of the basic theory has been around for 20 years,” Garg told Insider. “What changed 15 years ago was the cost of computing – people were able to use larger models for the same costs, which allowed them to find many more use cases of AI.”

In 2022, venture capital investments in AI and machine learning totaled $48.2 billion as of June 30, according to a recent PitchBook report. Last year, venture capital deals in AI and machine learning totaled $118 billion, an increase of about 80% from 2020, according to the report.
