Position of Director of the School of Natural and Computational Sciences at the UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN

HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF NATURAL AND COMPUTER SCIENCES

Applications are sought for an exciting opportunity as Head of the School of Natural and Computational Sciences at the University of Aberdeen, one of the top 20 universities in the UK* and top 200 in the world**.

The School of Natural and Computational Sciences is a home to world-leading research and top-notch education. It is a research-intensive academic unit engaged in basic, pure and applied research in its four disciplines of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. Our four disciplines engage in a wide range of research ranging from pure mathematics and theoretical aspects of computer science to new technologies and industrial research, with several successful spin-off companies developed in recent years. The new school principal will work with research leaders across the school, with an understanding of the different dynamics and approaches in each discipline.

The school, whose disciplines are all highly ranked in the UK, has an excellent reputation for its undergraduate and postgraduate education provision. As a research-intensive school, we pride ourselves on providing high teaching standards that are based on the latest research and developments in related scientific fields. Like most Scottish universities, we offer a variety of 4-year undergraduate degrees in Chemistry, Computing, Maths and Physics.

We also offer joint degrees with a wide range of other subjects. Our postgraduate offering includes a rapidly growing range of one-year Masters programs in all four subjects. There have been significant investments in the school’s teaching facilities, including the brand new £37million Science Teaching Center which opens this semester and a range of new or newly refurbished laboratories for the education in computer science and data science.

You should be ambitious in your vision for the school, ensuring it is aligned with our Aberdeen 2040 vision, and be able to build on our track record, further develop the school’s research culture and to be prepared to lead change to meet the demands of students, staff, research funders and the organizations with which we interact. We welcome candidates with training in one of the School’s disciplinary fields.
